Every year tens of millions of game birds are bred on factory farms for the sole purpose of being shot on estates across England and Wales.
Minimum standards for the protection of animals bred or kept for farming don't apply to birds farmed for the ‘game’ shooting industry. They aren’t afforded even the basic welfare protection given to birds farmed for food.
Can you imagine being kept in a cage with other birds for weeks on end, with no space and nothing to cling to other than the wire mesh of the cage itself? Spending your entire life trapped, stressed, injured, and exposed to the elements, your sole purpose laying egg after egg to produce chicks that are reared just to be shot.
Caged breeding of game birds is industrial scale cruelty in the name of ‘sport’. It must end.
